2014 Urban breed interview
Serious Black came together when bassist Mario Lochert (Emergency Gate, ex-Visions of Atlantis) began conversing with guitarist Roland Grapow (Masterplan, Level 10, ex-Helloween) about the possibility of uniting some of metal’s great talents for a new project. The duo quickly tapped drummer Thomen Stauch (Savage Circus, ex-Blind Guardian) who was quickly followed by bassist Jan Vacik (ex-Dreamscape) and guitarist Dominik Sebastian (Edenbridge). The only element missing was a voice to bring it all together. They found their frontman in former Tad Morose vocalist Urban breed (he spells it in lower case) who has lent his voice to the likes of Bloodbound, Trail of Murder, and most recently, Project Arcadia. The Swedish born singer was immediately excited about the project and began sending the band his song ideas.
While much of the music for the debut album was already written when Urban joined the band, he did contribute some material of his own including the basis for the albums opening track, “I Seek No Other Life”:
“‘I Seek No Other Life’ was a song I had written for my solo album originally. I guess I’ve been cannibalizing it for a while. It’s never gonna happen. I’m just gonna take songs from it and have other people give their input too. The one reason that I don’t want to do that solo album is because if I do everything it tends to become ‘Urban.’ I mean that’s just a little one dimensional. I do like to have other people’s input, and it makes a big difference. So I sent that song in and they did their magic to it, and it turned out a much better song. Every single step along the way was an improvement.”
During our interview with Urban about the debut Serious Black album, As Daylight Breaks, he discussed what drew him to the project. He also spoke about his debut album with Project Arcadia, his disdain for Facebook, some of the albums that changed his life, and what television show he would have enjoyed appearing on. Urban even shared his goal to do a duet with an amazing female vocalist whose band released one of 2014’s top progressive-power metal albums. Listen below to find out whose voice gives him goose-bumps.
Serious Black‘s As Daylight Breaks will be released January 20, 2015 through AFM Records. The band will tour Europe this winter with Hammerfall.
