Hailing from Chicago, Romantic Rebel is on a mission to deliver high-energy heavy rock to the masses. Formed in 2012 by brother and sister duo of guitarist Alex Vincent and vocalist KT Paige, the band built up a massive and loyal regional following in the Midwest. The latter half of 2013 found Romantic Rebel in the studio working on their debut album with producer Ulrich Wild (Otep, Deftones, Snoop Dogg, Pantera). The self-titled 2014 release captured the band’s raw intensity and foreshadowed what the future might hold for the quartet. Since the debut’s release, bassist Zach Smith and drummer Ty Del Rose have joined the line-up and the band has recently been finishing up the recording of their new 5-song EP Begin Again with Grammy-nominated producer Johnny K (Disturbed, Pop Evil, 3 Doors Down, Megadeth, Machine Head). This month, Romantic Rebel hits the road with Smile Empty Soul for a national tour, and Metalholic had a quick chat with KT Paige about the band’s upcoming new EP, changing musical directions, and more.
Romantic Rebel is well-known throughout the Midwest, but for those elsewhere can you enlighten us with some back story on the band?
“We sort of started out as a basement project band. We were doing a bunch of covers, just messing around, and we decided, hey, let’s write some original stuff. We started branching out, and the rest is history.”
You and Alex do all the writing. How has that evolved since your 2014 debut album and the new EP?
“It evolved like crazy. Our sound evolved and we went through different experiences and struggles, and that gave us more material.”
You worked with Ulrich Wild on the debut album, and Johnny K on the new EP. How different has it been between the two of them and what did you take away from the experience?
“They were both great in different ways. The debut album was quite a long time ago and we were just getting started with everything. We’d never recorded anything before. Working with Johnny K, he really helped our songs. We felt they were really great, and he took them to the next level and helped us bump them up a bit.”
Tell us about the Begin Again EP from your perspective.
“I don’t know. I feel like we’re going to call it Begin Again because our sound evolved and there is just a lot of new themes in there. Usually a lot of our songs are about being yourself and not letting anyone tell you how you should live your life or influence you in any way. If you went through something bad you can start over and do things better the next time.”
You’ve already released the first song and video for “Too Far”. Is that song indicative of the rest of the songs on the EP or maybe just one aspect of what fans can expect to hear?
“They’re all sort of different. They all are especially different from our first album, but they definitely all go together with the new sound too. ‘Too Far’ is really about a bad relationship with someone who was extremely into drugs and moving on from that and breaking away.”
The title track, “Begin Again” is one of your favorites. Tell us about that one.
“That is sort of what I feel like is the song after ‘Too Far’, where you can just—you know, you’re starting over, and you’re moving forward, and you’re beginning the next chapter of your life: Whatever that may be.”
