This winter, guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer is tearing up North American roads with Obscura, which is on tour through mid-December in support of the band’s third studio album, Omnivium. The CD was released back in March on Relapse Records to positives reviews from critics and fans alike.
Obscura is currently on a headlining trek with Abysmal Dawn, Last Chance To Reason and Enfold Darkness. If that’s not enough to make a metal fan thankful, his other project, Thulcandra, just released its newest album, Under A Frozen Sun on Napalm Records
The follow up to 2010’s Fallen Angel’s Dominion, Under A Frozen Sun is a decidedly bleak and often morose slab of blackened death metal. I had an opportunity to catch up with Steffen in Germany shortly before the start of Obscura‘s current tour. The frontman takes us track by desolate track through the new record, letting us know what he his thoughts were when creating each song. He talks about the album’s title, the duet that never came to pass, and what he does when he’s not performing music.
