Paola Pellegrini LexRock interview
Italy’s hard-driving rocker, Paola Pellegrini, is all set to shift gears after releasing her debut album Dreams Come True in January this year. The record’s early success has found the ambitious musician a good fan base in her country to launch her solo musical career; strengthening her determination and commitment. The music on this album; with ingredients of punk rock, metal and some blues, sounds different from what we usually get to hear in other contemporary mainstream rock records, which has been admired by listeners for its’ novelty. The tandem of Paola’s emotive vocals and nifty guitar works are the sure merits of the album, which is based on the theme of love and optimism in the face of adversity.
Paola recently had a lengthy discussion with Metalholic’s Indraneel Mukherjee regarding music and the music scene of her town. She shares her background, plans and opinions at length. You can also check out the video for the single, “Take Me”.
Who inspired you to evolve into a rock artist and pursue a career in the music industry?
I listen to hard rock since I was very young. The first hard rock band that I have listened to was Guns’n’Roses and I have been thunderstruck! I had never heard so heavy and wild music and I loved it. Then, I have never stopped to listen to hard rock, metal and punk.
How do you classify the genre of your music?
I’m a songwriter “sui generis”: a hard rock singer-songwriter. In my music there are influences from various genres of music like hard rock, punk, metal that are intertwined with my personal insights, creating a sound that varies from song to song, but with a common denominator that runs through all my compositions. I think that the energy and passion are the aspects that most characterize my music, along with texts intense and never trivial, all seasoned with a touch of femininity. I would define my style … LEXROCK !!
What are some of the greatest challenges you faced so far in your journey?
I played in various bands and worked with different musicians, but I always wrote my lyrics and music and then I started my solo career: PAOLA PELLEGRINI LEXROCK, coining the terms LEX=LAW and ROCK to describe my commitment to protect the constitutionally guaranteed rights of people (I’m a criminal lawyer) and the sense of disruptive force and love for authenticity which is ROCK.
Any special names you would like to mention who supported you in reaching your goal?
I always believed in myself and in my music. There are also many difficulties to reconcile my job as lawyer with my passion but I go forward with confidence and determination and the great reviews and feedback that my album is getting, give me confirmation to continue my way.
What are the merits and demerits of being a solo artist?
It’s a great satisfaction to make a record where I wrote all music and all the lyrics and I played all the guitars and sang all voices. But of course, it was a great job that I had to face relying only on my strength.
What do you have to say about the reception of your debut album in your country?
I’m very happy because I have many good reviews and also many people are writing me to tell me that they love my music, and things are going good also from abroad! You can visit my website to find more infos: www.lexrock.it
Which is your most favorite song from your debut album?
It’s a very hard question. In this album there are 11 tracks, each song is different from the other, and each song express a part of me.
On a scale of 10 how much would you give your debut album?
I think I have done a very good job and also my label has done a very good production to have a great sound. I would give 9, just because you can never reach the perfection, but I’m really proud!
According to you what are the pros and cons of this album?
I think that this is a very personal question and each one that will listen to my album can find his own answer, but I really think that is a great album.
What are your key responsibilities as an artist?
I think an artist has to express himself with passion and seriously. Dreams Come True is an album all about love: not mawkish or superficial love, but love translated into music, sometimes angry, sometimes poetic, sometimes fun, but all the time with great passion and emotion. Even in the darkest and aggressive episodes i.e. the song “Amore Abissale“= Abyssal Love, the underlying message of the album is hope. Dreams can come true, including the dream of true love. We can always keep moving forward believing in it, even when we know that pain and sorrow will always try to infiltrate their way into every searching moment for authenticity and lasting happiness.
If you could collaborate with three music artists for recording who they would be?
Are you touring to promote your debut album? How important are concerts for you and why?
I’m playing around as much as I can, of course concerts are very important and I love to play live, but today there are many other ways to promote a record.
What’s your opinion about the rock/metal scene of Italy?
There are many good bands, but unfortunately here there is not a big space for rock music, here the mainstream is melodic pop music sung in Italian.
Are you working on new material for your next album? Around when can we expect the new album to be released?
Now I’m concentrating on the promotion of Dreams Come True, but I have always new music of mine so there will be other albums.
Tell us something about your family, your personal life. How would you like to describe yourself as a person?
It is not an easy task describing me, an intricate all-around expression of rock. The term that best describes my diverse nature would be “polyhedral”: professional criminal lawyer in the city of Florence (Italy) by day and a devout rock guitarist, singer/songwriter by night.
Other than music and law any other activity you are involved in?
I’m also a writer, I have already written 3 books, last is a novel called “Ingollare Senza Affogare” (“Swallow without Drowning”), a rock and roll love story focused on the harder paths in life and finding answers to your deepest ambitions. The book is written in my own personal fast-paced hard rock style.
What according to you are the “Do”s and “Don’t”s for any talented aspiring music artist to make a place in the music industry?
You have to be yourself and find the best way to make a quality job with professional people, without losing your own style.
What’s your take on music piracy and free music downloading? Do you indulge in free downloading of other artists’ music too?
To realize a professional album is a very hard job, so I don’t agree free downloading.
What do you think makes your music different from that of rest of the artists?
Passion and energy are the most important things that you can hear in my music. But I have my own style, sometimes fast, sometimes heavy, sometimes fun but it’s always me with my inspiration and my way to play the guitar and to sing. In my new album Dreams Come True songs are very different from each other.
If you were not a rock music artist, what you might have been?
I’m a lawyer and a writer, in addition to being a musician. I think it’s enough!!
Name a few music albums which you think as some of the best records ever released.
Guns ‘N’ Roses’ Appetite For Destruction, Judas Priest’s Painkiller, Metallica’s And Justice For All, Ramone’s Loco Live, AC/DC ‘s Highway To Hell.
I’m influenced by the great hard rock/metal/punk bands that I have always loved like Ramones, Judas Priest, Elvis, Metallica, AC/DC, Motorhead, Led Zeppelin, Doors, Black Sabbath and many more.
What are your turn–ons and turn-offs?
I’m a determined person and work hard to achieve what I believe. I hate hypocrisy and people who betray my trust.
What does rock/metal music mean to you?
It’s my great passion and rock/metal music makes me feel free and myself. It’s something I couldn’t do without!
If there was one thing you could change about the current music scene what it would be?
Internet has changed many things and also music. I’d like people to go more to concerts to listen to the bands, instead of just sitting at home listening music on internet. You have to support your local scene!
Do you have any message for your audience?
Follow your dreams and cultivate your passions! You will never have regrets.
