Born in Middlesex, England, the son of New Orleans natives. Kirk discovered his passion for rock at a young age, his heroes; KISS, Thin Lizzy, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, to name but a few, are still close to his metal heart. But Kirk he would find his own passion to create metal in a thicker, darker, more cavernous form.
From his creation of legendary sludgemasters, Crowbar, to his work in Down, and more recently with Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) in Kingdom of Sorrow, Windstein has become iconic in NOLA and in the metal genre as a whole. With Crowbar‘s newest release, Sever The Wicked Hand, Kirk has reminded us all of his brilliance.
This month Kirk and Crowbar are out on the Metalliance Tour, and Metalholic caught up with the him in Greensboro, North Carolina. Despite battling a nagging chest cold, Kirk was as friendly and open as he always is. We talked about Crowbar’s new album, when we might see Down IV, and his plans to tour Mayhem Festival this spring with Jamey in aupport of Kingdom of Sorrow’s latest album, Behind The Blackest Tears. He also tells us which rock icon he’d choose to spend an evening chatting and hanging out with. Strap for 30 minutes with Kirk in two parts, below.
