2015 Niclas Engelin interview
In Flames guitarist, Niclas Engelin, has been an extremely busy gentleman this last year. After slipping in and out of the line-up for the band since 1997, he finally recorded his debut studio effort with the band, resulting in 2014’s Siren Charms. Engelin originally joined the Swedish melodic death metal masters in 1997 as lead guitarist. Over the last two decades, he has seldom been far from the band’s inner circle. After band founder, Jesper Strömblad officially stepped down in 2010, Niclas signed on full-time in 2011.
Last year also marked the fourth studio release from, Engelin’s own band, Engel. The new record, Raven Kings, is the first to feature new vocalist, Mikael Sehlin. It marks a slight departure from the band’s earlier style, and the record is easily the band’s most cohesive to date. Although, Engelin remains the creative driving force behind the band, which he co-founded with guitarist Marcus Sunesson, his touring duties with In Flames have led him to take his name off the official band listing.
If In Flames and Engel were not enough to fill his plate in 2014, Engelin also took part in the writing and recording of the eponymous debut album from Drömriket (which means Dream Empire). The band also features Ralf Gyllenhammar of Moustach, drummer Magnus “Adde” Andréasson of Hardcore Superstar, and vocalist Jonas Slättung. The band performs solely in the Swedish language, adding a twist to the band’s sound.
This month, Metalholic sat down with Engelin in the midst of the In Flame’s Charming America tour, to talk about all three if his bands. You can watch the full interview below.
