Talent is an all too often lacking commodity in music. We have seen far too many bands over the years, with minimal talent and a truckload of good luck, good timing, and the right connections, who have gone on to become trendsational flash-in-the-pan fodder, and cut-out bin overstock.
Eighteen months ago one might have pegged Mutiny Within as a just another band with technical musical proficiency and decent songwriting chops. What a difference a year and some fortuitous timing can make. A random YouTube clip of a sick new vocalist in England that happened to catch the eyes and ears of a talented young songwriter and bassist in New Jersey, was like jumping in a haystack and landing ass first on the proverbial needle. Four headbangers from America would find their missing link in two rockers from across the pond. Truly great bands are generally the meeting of talent and chemistry, with a pint of good luck mixed in. Such is Mutiny Within.
Six like-minded talents collided to bring out the best in each other, setting their ship on what should prove to be a grand and perhaps legendary voyage.
A few weeks back I wrote an article on these six lads for Metalholic.com, which you can read here. Last week their first video for the single “Awake,” hit the internet. The song is an epic twisting sweep of heavy shredding, crushing blast beats, coarse and clean vocals, and soaring melody. Every element of all that is holy and good about heavy metal is threaded together in one 3:46 piece of ear candy. The best part is, “Awake” is only one of eleven brilliant mini-masterpieces on this debut disc.
Make no mistake, this will be one of 2010’s best debut albums, and metal fans would be wise to jump in with both feet now! Learn more about the band, including tour dates at their MySpace or Facebook pages.
Founder and bassist, Andrew “AJ” Jacobs will be the first to tell you, the band he plays in today is infinitely better, stronger, and more mature than the one he championed even a year ago. Every member of the band is essential and elemental to their creativity, abilities and success. He is joined in his journey by his brother Brandon (guitars), Chris Clancy (vocals), Bill Fore (drums), Drew Stavola (keyboards), and Danial Bage (guitars).
Next week Mutiny Within will strike out on the Tyrants of Evil Tour with Arch Enemy and Exodus, and next month their mammoth Roadrunner Records album will drop (Feb. 23rd). This week the band is taking some much needed down time prior to their world blowing up. While the rest of the band stayed home for the week, AJ flew down to Houston, Texas for some quiet time with his girl, before he becomes a road warrior for the year. I sat down with AJ for what turned into a 90 minute conversation about how it all started, where it’s all going, and how they got to this point. AJ was very engaging in his Ben Affleck, Good Will Hunting sort of brother-in-arms way. You can listen to the whittled down 50 minute version below.
