Mindset Evolution – Brave, Bold, and Broken
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Peoria, Illinois hard rock quintet, Mindset Evolution may seem like an overnight success story to some, but the band has been paying its dues in the Midwest since 2005. When a friend threw their name in the hat for Rockstar Energy’s 2011 Uproar Battle of the Bands contest, which they won against over 5300 other entries, they were suddenly on the national map. That victory earned them the opportunity to open the entire 2012 Rockstar Energy Uproar tour alongside the likes of Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind and more.
Mindset Evolution‘s sound, much like its overall attitude is about resilience and positive energy which comes to life in its music. The band is led by charismatic frontman Rob Ulrich, along with bassist Josh Bodeen, drummer Joey Gibbz, and guitarists Brad Prentice and Skyler Baer. Prior to the Uproar tour, Bodeen suffered a painful knee injury which might have signaled the end of the tour even before it began, but true to its persevering way, Bodeen and the band forged on. In so doing they impressed not only thousands of new fans, but fellow musicians and industry reps.
During the Uproar tour, Mindset Evolution offered fans an early taste of their debut album with an EP featuring five tracks, four of which appear on “Brave, Bold, & Broken“. The band was fortunate to tap modern recording icon Johnny K (Megadeth, Pop Evil, Disturbed) to produce and mix. Johnny K remixed the four tracks, from the EP; “We Are Stars,” “Like to Fall,” “Relevant,” and “Hopeless” which were originally produced and mixed by Jay Baumgardner (Sevendust, Godsmack, P.O.D.).
“Brave, Bold, & Broken” is ripe with big riffs, memorable melodies, and hooky choruses, all of which starts with the opening track, “We Are Stars” that kicks off like a sonic buzzsaw. The song reinforces the band’s message of reaching for your dreams regardless of obstacles. Something the band has achieved with this record.
The album’s first single is the propulsive rocker, “Burn It Down” which rides the rails of an edgy groove with an aggressive vocal attack by Ulrich. The lyrics deliver a forceful and powerful message which will hit home for most everyone on some level.
“The Change”, “Invisible”, “Sing” and “Like To Fall” continue the trail of infectious anthemic rockers, any of which could readily find a home on active rock radio.
Track by track, “Brave, Bold, & Broken” vibrates with palpable kinetic energy. Even when the band slows the pace a bit for the album’s more emotional and vulnerable moments, one can’t help but feel alive with unspoken promise. Every member of the band deliver powerful individual performances that flow together to create an impressive whole. Ulrich deftly uses his voice to add depth and dimension to each song, whether angsty or tender or brutal. He finds the sweet spot that elevates the lyric and tone.
Mindset Evolution has delivered an inspired and purposeful debut with “Brave, Bold, & Broken“. Johnny K is once again masterful behind the board. This album has been a long time coming and stalwart fans will be rewarded with the outcome. The 11 tracks here represent the culmination of what conviction and determination can forge themselves into.
