This month, Atlanta’s alt-prog metal geniuses, Mastodon, returned to the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival stage for the first time since its 2008 inception. It marks the band’s first appearance on the main stage. On Day 3, in Boise, Idaho, Metalholic sat down with guitarist Bill Kelliher to discuss the tour, and recording the band’s next studio album this fall.
Thirteen years have passed since the founding of Mastodon, and over that stretch the band has released a series of five highly acclaimed albums, the last of which was 2011’s, “The Hunter”. Each record has been unique in style while always maintaining the quartet’s dark signature. It has been Mastodon’s ability to stretch its sound from one album to the next that has endeared them to fans on a global stage.
Unlike most of the band’s on the 2013 Mayhem Festival, Mastodon was not out in support of a new album but they still performed a good chunk of “The Hunter” at the Day 3 Boise show, including “Black Tongue”, “Curl of the Burl”, “Octopus Has No Friends”, “Dry Bone Valley”, “Spectrelight”, “Stargasm” and “Blasteroid”. They also performed “Oblivion” from 2009’s brilliant “Crack the Skye“, “Crystal Skull” from 2006’s “Blood Mountain“, and “Blood and Thunder” from 2004’s “Leviathan“. Bill, along with fellow guitarist Brett Hinds, drummer Brann Dailor, and bassist Troy Sanders ignited the main stage. Their 10-song performance, not surprisingly, was one of the day’s highlights.
