Laura Wilde interview: Guitars gone Wilde
There is no getting around the obvious; Laura Wilde is young, blonde and beautiful. She’s also Australian, which means she has an accent that makes your ears tingle. But if that is all you see then you are missing out on all the really good stuff. Oh yes, there’s more. Wilde sings, and writes, and she’s a terror with six-strings and a Marshall. All of that and she’s only 23. This week as she prepares to decimate the heartland of America for the second straight summer with Ted Nugent, she took the time to talk to Metalholic.
Wilde started her journey into music at two-years-old when she began tinkering with the piano and stole her brother’s toy guitar. She has never looked back. Drawing inspiration from guitarists like Slash, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, Laura centered her six-string acumen on blues-based rock. While she has something of a punky vocal vibe that recalls a mix of her heroes like Shirley Manson from Garbage, Suzi Quatro, Joan Jett, and Gwen Stefani, she chose not to emulate others in finding her own voice:
“The best advice actually that anyone ever gave me about singing was that it’s basically your talking voice with a melody behind it. So I’ve tried to stay as true to that formula as possible. It’s one of those things where you can try to emulate someone’s voice then it doesn’t really sound as good as theirs.” (laughs)
Her teens found Wilde as a coveted session player in Melbourne, and she was also part of the house band for Australia’s Got Talent. By 19 she realized her passion for rock and roll required a global change of scenery and she took a leap of faith to Los Angeles, California. She spent the next several years writing and recording her debut album, “Sold My Soul“. When she could not find other musicians who quite got what she wanted to do she opted to perform all the instruments on her own. The result turned enough heads to warrant tours with the likes of Shinedown, Fuel, and or course the Motor City Madman.
After she finishes her current summer tour with Uncle Ted, Laura will head back to the studio, a wiser, more well-rounded musician and vocalist. Her second album promises to take her punk and blues rock and roll foundation to the next level. This time she won’t do it all alone. In fact, she hints there may be a few special guests, and while her lips are sealed for the moment, there has been some buzz that the iconic Geezer Butler may make an appearance.
Laura Wilde may have discovered music in the 90s and grown up in the aughts, but her musical ethos and work ethic hark to the hard-working artists of the 70s who understood talent over trend. As a young woman in the sometimes elitist world of testosterone driven hard rock, Wilde knows she will have to work harder than the boys, but she has the talent and tenacity to beat the odds and earn the respect of her peers and fans.
