Definition of Laconic: using or involving the use of a minimum of words: concise to the point of seeming rude or mysterious.
Definition of Travesty: the fact that Arizona metalcore merchants, Laconic remain unsigned.
Phoenix metalcore quintet, Laconic have it all going on. Unfortunately the right people have simply yet to notice. The band’s high energy performances and well-crafted tunes are simply too good to ignore. Formed in 2003, the line-up of vocalist Danny Brian, drummer Lee Dehmer, bassist Drew Alnas and guitarists Sanjay Parikh and Alex Boutte has developed a signature sound which is at once blistering and blissful. Drawing from influences such as Killswitch Engage, Chimaira, and The Deftones, Laconic have evolved its sound into a unique blend of homage to their collective heroes with an intense and powerful style of their own.
The band has released two albums to date. The first, Visions, laid a sonic groundwork of frenetic and fiery bedlam, offset by softer moments of acoustic nuance and haunting edginess. Summer 2011 saw the self-release of the group’s sophomore effort, For The Life of One, produced by Ben Schigel (Straight Line Stitch, Chimaira, Drowning Pool). Schigel isn’t going to waste his time on a project he doesn’t feel is worthy. His presence is statement enough alone. Still the music speaks loudly and on its own terms.
For The Life Of One mixes ample amounts of pulverizing rhythms with huge melodies, and dynamic breakdowns with tight crunchy and addictive riffs. The blend of harsh and clean vocal styles, a hallmark of metalcore, is done exceedingly well, giving listeners just enough soaring clean passages to offset Danny Brian’s face-melting guttural growls. Tracks like “Bridge Burner”, “Murderous Trait” and “Never Enough” provide enough high-velocity ammo to splatter grey matter through the cranium of even the thickest skull.
While the desert valley denizens of brutal sonic revery remain as yet unnoticed by the industry nitwits, one listen will alert you to the obvious truth of the band’s monstrous future.
Definition of Sonic Symbiosis: The mutual act of getting into Laconic’s music and letting Laconic’s music get into you.
