When most people outside of Idaho think of Boise, they think of the college with the blue Astro-turf, huckleberrys, Ernest Hemingway, Ruby Ridge and potatoes, and the latter four aren’t even related to the City of Trees. What would likely not occur to most, is the large contingent of metalheads the city boasts. There exists a surprising amount of raw and brutal talent in this unlikely of places, and among the more notable of those band’s is Kryterium.
The seeds of Kryterium were planted in late 2005, with vocalist Michael Chaves, guitarist John “Voodoo” Karber, and bassist Troy “Wolf” Komula. Those seeds germinated in 2006. Or as the band likes to say say, they were forged with hammer and fire. Regardless, they came out swinging with a full force onslaught of metal mayhem. Their sound combines elements of thrash, and melodic death metal. They focus on high energy performances with aggressive vocals, groove heavy riffs, and a solid bottom end.
Mikey, John and Troy, along with members Jacob Carley and Cliff Schramm recorded the band’s initial demo in Spring 2006. Over the course of the next year the band literally exploded, waging war from coast to coast. They played the main stage at the Milwaukee Metalfest XIX, then upon winning the Ernie Ball Battle of the Band’s, got the opportunity to play the Idaho date for Van’s Warped Tour 2007. That fall they blew up New England’s biggest Rock fest, Locobazooka! ’07 with Alice Cooper and Heaven & Hell.
With their stunning momentum the band entered the studio that Winter to record their debut album Control, which was released locally on Triton Records. The album was produced by Chris Parks and Jason Ringelstetter at Tonic Room Studios in Boise, and mastered by Brian Gardner (Lamb Of God, Ozzy Osbourne) in Los Angeles, California. In March of 2008, their song, “Unlock The Gates”, was a featured track on the collector’s CD in Metal Edge Magazine.
Eager to keep the momentum going the band hopped right back out on the road playing festivals like Locofest 2009 in West Palm Beach, Florida, the 3rd Annual California Metalfest, and the Summer Slaughter 2009 tour . At the latter event Kryterium was the singular unsigned band on the main stage.
In 2009, the band released its second demo, The Reckoning.
While it’s not unusual for a local band to occasionally get on a bill with a National act, Kryterium does it with frequency. They have shared the stage (often as direct support) with top national acts such as Slipknot, Queensryche, Mudvayne, Killswitch Engage, HELLYEAH, Carcass, Exodus, Hed PE, Shadows Fall, Trivium, Chimaira, In This Moment, All That Remains, OTEP, As I Lay Dying, Suffocation, Powerman 5000, God Forbid, Goatwhore, Darkest Hour, Nonpoint, Throwdown, Ensiferum, Winds Of Plague, Necrophagist, Decrepit Birth, Veil Of Maya, and Sonata Arctica to name but a very few. In July they’ll head to Reno, Nevada and add a gig with Machine Head to their resume.
While they have gone through a series of drummers and second guitarists, the core trio of Chaves, Karber and Komula remains, and they have now rounded out the line-up with guitarist Pat Moore and skin-pounder Kris Burda.
Despite the aggressive and at times caustic nature of the music Kryterium performs, they are still a band with a heart and sense of community. They once played a benefit concert for a boy with throat cancer, and donated all the money they made from their cds to the cause.
