Finland has long been home to some of the darkest, most brutal yet sad and poignantly mesmerizing melodic death metal. On October 18th, veterans Insomnium will unleash their most complete and inspired album to date, the lush yet caustic, One For Sorrow.
The quartet is back with 10 haunting new tracks, that could easily flay the soul. The CD was recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden with sound engineer Daniel Antonsson (Dark Tranquillity bassist and Dimension Zero guitarist) who also laid down a solo on the track “Only One Who Waits”. Part of the album was also recorded at Fantom studios in Tempere, Finland, where the album was mixed by Samu Oittisen.
Said guitarist Ville Friman of the album’s title:
“The name One For Sorrow comes from a traditional children’s nursery rhyme. There are ten different scenarios in the original rhyme; likewise there are ten different songs and stories on our album. I think One For Sorrow truly depicts what this album is all about: bereavement, grief and loss.”
This week our friends over at HailsandHorns.com posted the new album in its entirety for streaming along with an exclusive track-by-track commentary by guitarist Ville Friman. Check it out right here!
A day later I caught up with bassist and vocalist Niilo Sevänen to get his own personal take on each of the album’s 10 tracks, as well as the bonus track “Weather The Storm” featuring Dark Tranquillity vocalist Mikael Stanne. Niilo also opened up on his passion for sports and writing, and more.
