Mayhem Festival 2011 Goes Up IN FLAMES
One of the many highlights of the 2011 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival is the chance to see and hear Sweden’s, In Flames. After a year off, and a two year absence from U.S. soil, summer 2011 bring fans the band’s 10th studio effort, Sounds of a Playground Fading, and a sweet spot on the Mayhem tour.
The band missed the first couple of shows due to prior commitments overseas, so their stop in Boise would be only their second show of the tour. Certainly the performance they put on headlining the Revolver Extreme Stage showed no sign of rust. In Flames fans catching shows during the first two weeks of August can look forward to seeing the band on the Main Stage.
In Flames has been an epic force in melodic death metal for over two decades. They are among the founders of the Gothenburg, Sweden scene, and influences on almost every extreme metal band out there.
Their new album, Sounds of a Playground Fading sold nearly 14,000 copies its first week, here in the U.S. While the album is not breaking any significant new ground, In Flames are solidifying their hold on the foundation they’ve built and cultivated for themselves and the numerous band’s their sound has spawned.
Prior to the band’s set, I managed to sneak bassist Peter Iwers aside for a few noisy minutes to touch base on the tour, and the new album. (Note to Mayhem: next year put the press tent somewhere that isn’t noisier than Grand Central Station and windier than a politician’s speech).
