Huntress interview with guitarist Blake Meahl
This weekend SoCal metal merchants, Huntress hit the road as part of the 2013 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival. This marks the band’s first year on the tour, and they are the first band out the gate on the Jagermeister stage, adding the extra responsibility. Metalholic caught up with the band on day 3 in Boise, Idaho, a show they nearly missed. After their high energy performance we sat down with co-founder and guitarist Blake Meahl to talk about the tour, and the release, that day, of their sophomore effort, “Starbound Beast”.
Huntress stormed out the gates last year on the strength of their debut album, “Spell Eater”. Frontwoman Jill Janus immediately turned heads with her four octave vocal range and unique beauty. Drummer Carl Wierzbicky and bassist Ian Alden hold down the band’s powerful rhythms. Alden began as the band’s second guitarist before bassist Eric Harris left to focus on his own band Gypsyhawk. Alden moved over to handle four-string duties and guitarist Anthony Crocamo stepped in.
The new record, “Starbound Beast” was recorded at Hobby Shop Studios in Los Angeles, CA, working with famed producer Zeuss (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed, Agnostic Front). The artwork for “Starbound Beast” was created once again by Vance Kelly (Slayer, Ghost B.C., Mastodon).
Huntress has been off to a hot start on the Mayhem tour; hotter than even they bargained for. After 100+ degree days in San Bernadino and Mountain View, California, the band, who shares a bus with Battlecross, headed across the desert for an off day show in Tahoe. The tour bus air conditioning went out, and the bus had to be coddled along to another 100+ degree day in Boise. Huntress arrived 10 minutes before their set time, but they hit the stage and delivered in true metal fashion.
While the drained troop took time to recoup after the set, Janus was tasked with taking over Mayhem’s Instagram and Twitterfeeds for the day, so Meahl sat down to talk about making the new record, working with Lemmy Kilmister, and filming their newest video.
