Five Finger Death Punch Q&A with Chris Kael
This weekend Las Vegas Based metal quintet, Five Finger Death Punch hit the road to co-headline the 2013 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival. It marks the band’s third appearance and the second time they have graced the mainstage. Like everything else about the band, it has been a progression of success and metal attrition. On day 3 of Mayhem in Boise, Idaho, Metalholic sat down with the band’s newest knuckle, bassist Chris Kael. We talked about the group’s upcoming album release, “The Wrong Side of Heaven, and The Righteous Side of Hell”, Mayhem, and much more.
Five Finger Death Punch have always been about resolve and inner strength conveyed outward through their music and presence. Over the course of their first two albums, “Way of the Fist”, “War is the Answer” they realized a couple of knuckles were weaker than the others: Before and after their third album, “American Capitalist”, founders, Jeremy Spencer (drums), Zoltan Bathory (guitars) and Ivan Moody (vocals), fortified their fist with lead guitarist Jason Hook, and Kael. Both Hook and Kael have made a noticeable impact on the band’s cohesive feel, and for the first time, the fist is truly ready to pummel on a global stage.
After completing a hugely successful tour in support of “American Capitalist”, the guys headed straight back into the studio with their sixth man, producer Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, In This Moment, Slash). Before they knew it they had written more songs than one album could hold. Rather than sit on a few they opted to keep writing and soon had enough for two complete albums, with, as they say, “no filler.”
The album’s release will be broken into two volumes dropped several months apart. The first hits the market on July 30. Volume 1 features 14 tracks on its own. The album is also the first to feature not one but several guest appearances, including the Metal God himself, Rob Halford. Also throwing down will be Maria Brink (In This Moment), Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Sepultura), Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed, Kingdom of Sorrow), and Tech 9. The latter is featured on a unique rendition of LL Cool J’s classic, “Momma Said Knock You Out”. Did we mention, that’s just the first volume? There’s no telling what Volume 2 will bring.
One thing is for sure; Five Finger Death Punch has made a quick ascent to the rarefied air of stadium headliners in an era of pirated music and short attention spans. Their music and attitude resonates with fans. The more their popularity grows the louder the groans from the metal elitists, which is always a sign you’re doing something right. Despite the success the band has attained, they remain down to earth guys, perhaps even more so now than when they began. Strange but true.
