This week DevilDriver kicks off their North American tour with Suffocation, GoatWhore and Thy Will Be Done. The band’s latest album, 2009’s Pray For Villains was one of the year’s best, but the band has no desire to rest on their laurels. Following their winter tour, the band intends to spend April and May in the studio working on their fifth album, with hopes of kicking it out by Halloween. The album has already been named, but the band is keeping the title hush for now.
Bassist Jon Miller says the band has already put together six or seven tracks, and drummer John Boecklin blogged on the band’s MySpace page;
On our last record, I would say we stretched as far as we could outside of what we had done in the past, trying new and slower songs with vocal melody like ‘It’s In The Cards‘ or the rock like feel of songs like ‘Back With A Vengeance‘ and ‘Teach Me To Whisper‘. For our latest effort, we feel like musically going for the throat, so to speak.
Are we gonna make a death metal album? No! We always have a heavy emphasis on groove and hook. That will not change. We just feel we have a certain anger edge about us and the songs we are writing compared to our last one. It will not be rushed and if you are a fan, you will not be let down!!
This week the band spent the night before the tour having a BBQ bash at vocalist Dez Fafara’s place. Dez says the first night of the tour went very well, and hoped the rest of the tour would follow suit. Metalholic caught up with his metal eminence on the band tour bus in San Francisco. We discussed the new tour, their January 19th live webcast (see below), politics and conspiracy theories, the next album, and Dimebag Darrell, among other topics. Perhaps Dez even gave us a hint to the next album’s title in his final words. Who knows? Listen and enjoy.
