2015 Civil War interview with Patrik Johansson
Astral Doors frontman, Nils Patrik Johansson, a bit surprised when he got word in 2012 that four members of Swedish metal troop, Sabaton were parting ways with the band. He immediately reached out to the guys, and Civil War was born. The band, which featured drummer Daniel Mullback, keyboardist Daniel Mÿhr, bassist Stefan “Pizza” Eriksson, and guitarists Oskar Montelius and Rikard Sundén, made an immediate impact with its debut album, The Killer Angels in 2013.
While The Killer Angels was fairly successful, earning a gold record back home in Sweden, the band felt their label, Despotz Records was not up to the task of promoting the band properly. Last year they accepted an offer from Napalm Records and in September entered the studio again with the addition of guitarist Petrus Granar, to record its sophomore effort, Gods and Generals. While Napalm has had the band sitting on the record for a May 12 release, Pizza and Montelius left the band, with the latter stating his heart was no longer into making music. Fortuitously, the band had already added Granar, who played a significant role in writing the new record, and who Johansson reveals, co-wrote a couple of songs for the previous record.
This week, Metalholic and Metal Nation Radio connected with Patrik to discuss Gods and Generals, shifting band members, and his thoughts on concert goers who spend most of their time watching through the lens of their cellphone.
