Chris Green may not be a household name even in metal circles, but his guitar chops, and songwriting prowess are known by those who pay attention to such things. This week I caught up with the virtuoso in England, to talk about his work in Furyon, Rubicon Cross, and his own solo record.
Green has been collaboratively tied to Furyon vocalist Matt Mitchell for years. The two have been involved in any number of endeavors, including the band Pride. With Furyon the two created a band, which also consists of guitarist Pat Heath, bassist Alex “Nickel” Bowen and drummer Lee Farmery, that encompasses all of the elements of a great hard rock and metal band. A blend of strong melody with a solid rumbling bottom end, and serious two-guitar, ear candy riffage that pulls in flavors from the 70s to the present.
The band’s debut album, Gravitas , which was produced by Rick Beato (Shinedown, Fozzy), was released as a limited special edition in Europe last year to rave reviews. This spring, Frontiers records gave it a full release. With so much time since Gravitas was recorded, Green admits that he is already deep into writing the next Furyon record.
“We’ve never really stopped writing,” confided Green, “It’s just that Gravitas is such a strong album, a second album would need to be equally as strong. I know that both myself and Matt have always been very aware of band’s second albums. There’s always been a bit of a jinx on them. And it’s because you’ve had your whole life to write a first album. When the second album comes along there’s a lot of pressure. you’re trying to recreate the whole thing again. There’s a lot of things that go through your mind. So as far as writing material for the new album, yes, music has been written.”
The first single from Gravitas is “Disappear Again”, the video for which can be seen below. The entire song, according to Green, came together on the fly. “Matt was sitting out by the swimming pool and he came in and said, ‘look, I’ve got this chorus idea.’ And he sang it, and both me and Rick sat down with a guitar. And that song came about in, I’d say 20 to 30 minutes, from start to finish. It was that quick.” That guy, Rick, our producer is a genius. He knows how to drag every last ounce of creativity out of you.”
Green has also found a musical kinship with Firehouse vocalist CJ Snare. The two struck up a friendship, and a songwriting partnership soon developed into the band Rubicon Cross. In 2001, the band released a limited EP to whet our collective appetite, but the full length debut is anticipated to be released this summer.
We just found out our new single, which is called “Locked and Loaded“, is going to be on the new Xbox and PS3 game, Dirt Showdown,” Green said of the new Rubicon Cross material.
Listen to our full interview with Chris below and find out all that is going on with Furyon and Rubicon Cross, and hear what Chris has in store for his debut solo album. And then there’s his other band…
