Ripe is a heavy metal band hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark. They’re still relatively new to the metal scene, but have two previous full length albums available and have really hit their stride with The Eloquence of Silence. The album featured guests such as Michael Denner (Mercyful Fate, King Diamond) and he has been quoted saying that this band is “old school metal that rocks”, which is pretty spot on.
Upon first listen it’s hard to judge where exactly in the metal world Ripe fits, somewhere straddling the lines of power metal, classic heavy metal, and hard rock. They blend together unique and fascinating vocal work on top of soaring guitar solos and crunching riffs, grooving bass lines, and killer drums. The vocals are almost haunting, as Michael Bastholm Dahl has a near hollow sound to his highs that paired with the slight reverb found in most songs makes for a chilling experience.
“Fade to Rise” kicks off the album with a fast and in your face riff, pounding drums, and a killer introduction to the vocal style found throughout the album. This is a great beginning, the true sound of heavy metal, and really proves to you what this band is all about. Continuing on, “Dreamwalker” begins with a great grooving riff, but pulls the album to a more hard rock feeling. The vocals take a turn to the harsher side, while clean singing still remains, and opens up to a beautiful bridge to the chorus. Then the album has tracks like “A Part Apart” that are straight up power metal. The guitar work and solo work in this song is fantastic, combining the galloping drums and bass line, it’s one of the best moments on the album, and it’s a true shame that the song isn’t even three minutes long.
The band reveals a darker side to their music in tracks like “Bloodlust” and “Xenophobe in Hiding” with fundamentally eerie vocal melodies and guitar work, but great groove. Mellowing out, the album wouldn’t be complete without a ballad-like track, “Song for a Shadow”. Dahl’s voice sounds a bit flat in the acoustic intro but it truly adds to the sadness felt in the lyrics. When the song picks up into distortion and drums, it quickly becomes one of the best on the album. It’s emotional and strong, topped with a catchy chorus, all around a great recipe for a great song.
Each song helps all of the members shine, and shows a different side to Ripe with each passing minute. There isn’t a single moment of boredom or anything that creates the urge to skip to the next track. From start to finish, a true solid metal release for the fans of power and heavy metal alike!
