Euphoreon ~ Euphoreon (Self released)
Release Date: April 2011
Created by New Zealand-based guitarist and harsh vocalist Matt Summerville, Euphoreon is a melodic death metal band with epic power metal influences. The band I most closely relate them too is probably Finland’s Wintersun.
After self-releasing his 2009 demo, Before The Blackened Sky, Summerville connected with German-based producer/musician Eugen Dodenhoeft (Far Beyond). Eugen adds rhythm guitar, bass, and extra harsh and clean vocals to the project, as well as production and engineering. The duo spent two years putting the shine on what would become the band’s self-titled debut. Also contributing to the record is pianist Patrick Stäudle, who adds some of the albums most epic touches.
From the opening piano interlude of the first track “Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining” you can hear the Scandinavian and European melodic metal flavors in their sound.
“Before The Blackened Sky” touches off with a melodic power metal vibe, before Summerville comes in with his harsh growling.
Stäudle is back for the floating piano intro to “Forever Being”. Matt and Eugen counterpoint harsh and clean vocals on this one, as the song turns furious and perhaps majestic in places.
The album comes in at just over 45 minutes, with 8 songs. Saving the most regal and bombastic track, “Road To Redemption” to close out the record.
For a self-released debut, Euphoreon is surprisingly impactful. They show immense promise for future records, if they continue to build on this strong opening effort.
