Dischordia - Project 19

Dischordia - Project 19Label: Rogue Records America

Release Date: June 23, 2013

There are a lot of labels you can throw at Oklahoma City’s Dischordia.  Progressive, Old School, Technical, groove heavy.  But to be honest, all of that really takes away from what the band has accomplished with their full length debut Project 19.  The band pulls on influences from all over metal and still manage to produce an album that has a sound and appeal all its own.

Dischordia are Josh Turner on vocals/bass, Keeno on guitar/vocals and Josh Fallin on drums.  The band formed in 2010 and gained the attention of the California Bay Area record label Rogue Records America with their EP Creator/Destroyer.  The band quickly began making a name for themselves by touring and opening for bands such as The Faceless, Dying Fetus, Job For A Cowboy, and Between the Buried and Me.

When a band attempts to include too many different concepts in an album, more often than not the result is watered down.  Dischordia pull on their influences naturally in a way that doesn’t feel forced or like they are simply trying to impress.  They pull together old school brutality and new school technicality.

The album’s opener, “The Enemy” is a good example of that marriage of old and new.  The second track, “Torches” uses odd timing shifts and palm-muted guitars and reminds me a bit of Meshuggah.  “When She Saw Him” shows off the band’s more progressive facet.  On the track, “Madhouse” the band uses an acoustic interlude to really show off their musical chops.

DischordiaBandPicDischordia can effortlessly incorporate melody and delicacy in their brand of death metal.  My favorite track on the album, “Zone of Perpetual Darkness” shows that kind of range.  Following that track is the stomper, “The Grand Design” that chugs like an eighteen wheeler on a collision course with a Sherman tank.

I would say that Dischordia are a band with a lot of potential, but this is a band that is at the top of their game.  Musically, vocally and as song writers; Dischordia is a band to which you should be paying attention.  Project 19 is one of the best death metal albums released this year so far.
