Accept – Restless and Live
Label: Nuclear Blast
Release Date: January 13, 2017
German metal legends, Accept, are enjoying the most exciting period of their 40 year career. After reuniting in 2009 with new vocalist Mark Tornillo, the band unleashed its three most successful records to date, including 2014’s beastly, Blind Rage. The band’s mammoth worldwide tour in support of the Blind Rage album was their biggest and longest to date. It also marked the addition of new members, Uwe Lulis on guitar and Christopher Williams on drums, who joined founders Wolf Hoffmann (guitar) and Peter Baltes (bass). Shortly after their addition to the band, Accept returned to Europe for a series of shows which included the 2015 Bang Your Head Festival in Baligen, Germany, where the band recorded and filmed its new live set, Restless and Live.
Restless and Live includes the entire 18-song show from the Bang Your Head Festival, on DVD or Blu-ray. The visual component captures how mammoth Accept is on a big stage before thousands of fans. The real gift for fans here is the 2-disc audio recording. Rather than simply rip the audio from the DVD, the band opted to pull together 27 separate live performances from different European shows on the Blind Rage Tour. Including the track “Princess of the Dawn” taken from the DVD, this gives fans 28 different songs and 45 separate performances that demonstrate how powerful these tracks translate live.
Accept serve up a healthy dose of the Blind Rage album, playing eight songs from the record including; “Stampede,” “Dying Breed,” “Dark Side of My Heart,” “The Curse,” “Fall f the Empire,” “200 Years,” “Final Journey,” and “From the Ashes We Rise.” From the other two Tornillo era Accept albums they performed six more songs, including “Hellfire,” “Shadow Soldiers,” and the title track from 2012’s Stalingrad, and “Teutonic Terror,” “Pandemic,” and “No Shelter” from 2010’s Blood of the Nations.
The rest of the tracks are culled from the band’s early albums, with an emphasis on Accept‘s seminal 1982 record, Restless and Wild. Represented here are the iconic title track, “Demons Night,” “Flash Rockin’ Man,” “Fast as Shark,” and “Princess of the Dawn” (DVD only).
From the band’s breakout 1983 release, Balls to the Wall, they performed a rowdy version of “London Leather Boys,” as well as “Losers and Winners,” and the perennial show closing title track. Tornillo delivers on all of the old Accept classics, which also included “Midnight Mover,” “Living for Tonite,” and the title cut from 1985’s Metal Heart. They even went back to 1981’s Breaker album for a ballsy tune up of the anthem, “Starlight.” The guys even tossed in a mid-career track, with “Bulletproof” from 1993’s Objection Overruled album. Many of these classics sound even more impressive decades later, and it is all captured here on one set.
Normally I avoid writing reviews of live albums because they are generally just greatest hits records, but Accept has put something special together here that fans of all eras of the band, or simply any true metal fan will want to sink their ears and eyes into. Producer Andy Sneap has done a fabulous job mixing the audio.
