Every Hour Kills debut new EP
Lately it seems like many of the new bands popping up on my radar are hailing from Canada, and that holds true for Calgary, Alberta’s Every Hour Kills. The band is one of many bright new stars in the modern wave of melodic metal. The band evolved a few short years ago when former Kobra and the Lotus drummer Rob Shawcross connected with former Divinity Sacha Laskow. The duo tapped bassist Brent Stutsky (ex-Breach of Trust, ex-Death Valley Dolls), and vocalist Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster (Walk As Chaos), who worked with Shawcross in the bands Autobody and Out of Your Mouth.
Inspired by an anonymous literary quote “Every hour wounds, but the last one kills.”, Every Hour Kills is a power house ensemble progressing as a unit of epic, modern, melodic groove Metal with a twist of djent. The quartet has pushed forward in studio over the years with Laskow leading the pack’s song writing to collaborate and create an extreme sound for new fans that ranges from those familiar with heavy weights such as Soilwork, Sevendust, Meshuggah to electronic music and even rock radio friendly tunes.
“The key is blending all those genres and influences into a cohesive style.” comments Laskow. “All the tracks we have completed at this time, are not written to ‘throwaway’ or do as filler tracks, every song has to have a ‘single’ quality for us to work on it and add it to our set.”
Every Hour Kills released its eponymous EP on September 18 and the buzz is building. The EP features five tracks that blend classic. groove, progressive, and alternative metal elements together in a manner both familiar and refreshing. Bands as diverse as Scar Symmetry, Nothing More, Amaranthe, and even Pretty Maids all come to mind listening to tracks like “Chosen”, “Almost Human”, “Deliver Us”, and “SaviourS”.
