2015 Borealis interview with Matt Marinelli
Canadian power metal quintet, Borealis returns this summer with its third and newest album, Purgatory. The record’s release marks the tenth anniversary of the band which was founded in 2005. The Ontario natives originally conceived of the band as a female-fronted outfit along the lines of Nightwish or Epica, but when their singer left early on, guitarist Matt Marinelli stepped into the role of vocalist and the band has not looked back since.
Marinelli is joined in Borealis by original band members Jamie Smith (bass), Sean Dowell (drums), and Sean Werlick (keyboards). The frontman recently sat down to chat with Metalholic about Purgatory, and the long journey it took to get the new record done. The album is the band’s first since 2011’s Fall From Grace, and the first to feature new guitarist, Mike Briguglio. Matt talked about the impact his new guitar mate had on the record:
“It was fresh input. I’ve been with the other guys for so long—even before we started the band, I‘ve been friends with them for so long, so it was nice to have a fresh set of ears, and just personality in general, to come in and put his two cents in. We think it really helped this album for sure, because [Mike] gave a little bit of a fresh tone to it.”
“Purgatory is definitely our most mature album. We wanted to try something a little different using the concept album approach, which isn’t really unique—it’s done all the time. But we thought it would be fun to do. We really love movies and stories, and this is something we could create. What’s different is this is so much darker than our previous [albums]. We go into some very serious tones in some points, but we think it fits the mood we are trying to get out of this album.”
