What does a middle-aged globe-trotting attorney have to do with hard rock and metal one might ask, and the answer is an interesting one. Ken Savage is no ordinary rock fan nostalgic for the good old days of classic headbanging rock and roll. He’s stopped whining about the wasteland of what’s become of his beloved genre and put together his own Resurgence of Rock. Tired of finding nothing new and worthwhile on the radio and wearing out the same old songs on his iPod, Savage put pen to paper and started crafting what would become lyrics for a new rock album, by a unique hard rock project.
Savage, who grew up in the Southwest and wiled away his misspent youth in many a Mexican cantina, enlisted the aid of friend and guitarist Austin Schell of (oddly enough) Austin, Texas. Schell took on the task of putting classic 70’s and 80’s hard rock riffs to the lyrics Savage had penned. Before long the two had crafted an album of new material that recalls the era Savage so fondly remembers. The duo, along with Austin’s brother Rick tapped the band name BlancaWhite, after the world-famous bar in Matamoros, Mexico.
With songs in hand, the band was missing one key element, a voice with which to convey Savage’s words and Schell’s melodies. They reached out to not one but four unique rock talents to create the pool of vocal talent which soaks Resurgence of Rock. Former XYZ and current Great White vocalist Terry Ilous signed on along with Paul Shortino (Quiet Riot, Rough Cutt, King Kobra), Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale, L.A. Nookie) and Jeff Paris (Cinderalla, Vixen, Slash, Keb Mo). A diverse group of veteran voices to be sure.
Rather than explain the entire project ourselves, Metalholic reached out to Ken Savage and let him talk about putting his music where his mouth is:
