Fall is shaping up to be busy touring season for Swedish theatrical metallers Avatar. The Gothenburg quintet recently finished a short run of festivals in the Northwest and will return to the U.S. on September 9th. Avatar will play a handful of dates opening for Avenged Sevenfold, Meshuggah, and Anthrax, as well as a number of headline shows. They are also hitting several festival dates including Rock Allegiance, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock. After a short break, the Swedes will continue their tour across Europe and wrap up a prolific year with two sold out hometown shows. Click here for all Avatar tour dates.
Avatar is supporting the recently released concept record, Feathers and Flesh. Hailed as their most ambitious work to date, the album is a modern-day fable exploring the human condition through the story of an owl. The official first single, “The Eagle Has Landed”, with its imaginative and humorous video, has been steadily climbing the charts. The band has skillfully carried the fable concept over to their live performances. Their matching costumes are hand-made and based on traditional Swedish folk garb. To complete the distinct look, the band hired a local artist to carve and paint their guitars and bass. No detail is too trivial for this exceptionally creative group.
Metalholic checked in with frontman Johannes Eckerström recently to discuss the new album. You’ll find the interview below, as well as our earlier interview from this spring, and “the Eagle has Landed” video. Also, check out live photos from the Feathers & Flesh tour.
