Another Lost Year interview with Clinton Cunanan
North Carolina hard rockers Another Lost Year have been hitting the radio hard and the road even harder since the September 2012 release of their debut album “Better Days”. On June 16, frontman and principal songwriter Clinton Cunanan checked in from the road to talk touring, influences, and much more.
In its brief existence, the Charlotte based quartet has already garnered numerous awards and accolades that many long-standing bands have yet to achieve. In 2011, their debut year, they nabbed a “North Carolina Rock Band of the Year” award on home turf. Not a bad start for Cunanan and his bandmates; drummer Lee Norris, bassist Jason Lovelace and guitarists, Adam Hall and David Whitaker.
However, it was in 2012 when they launched their debut album and performed more than 220 shows, that things really heated up for Another Lost Year. Healthy radio airplay across the nation, including Sirius/XM, led to features on Nikki Sixx’s SixxSense National radio show and the Loudwire National radio show. They had the #1 rock song with “War on the Inside” on iHeart Radio for much of the year until they were knocked out of first place by another of their own songs. Those were just a few choice rewards for the hardworking band who is already off to an even faster start in 2013.
“I don’t if we ever decided to do this or if it chose us.”
The debut album “Better Days” is a collection of songs that are essentially a series of stories from Cunanan’s life:
“They’re snapshots. Moments in time of just particular situations I was in. ‘War On The Inside’ I wrote about a year after my mom had died. I was at a crossroads in life when I didn’t know which way was up, which was down, do I go left or do I go right–and we all fight those demons. ‘Angels’ is about my relationship at the time, and it’s not a love song. It’s an apology. I have down days and I just sort of wrote about that. And I’ve had people tell me, ‘man, you give me hope and I know that I can make it through.’ Despite whatever adversity you face, if you’ve got hope you can do anything.”
Everything about Another Lost Year is about connecting music to emotion to fan, and “Better Days” is an album packed with emotive rockers. Cunanan, who draws inspiration from songwriters like Aaron Lewis and Benjamin Burnley, tells his own stories in a way that is relatable to listeners.
