2014 Upon a Burning Body interview with Ruben and Danny
From San Antonio, Texas, Upon a Burning Body has risen up to show a different side of Lonestar metal. The band is currently out enjoying its run on the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. On Day 4, Metalholic sat down with vocalist Danny Leal and guitarist Ruben Alvarez to discuss Mayhem, and the band’s upcoming third album, The World is My Enemy Now. The new record was once again produced by Will Putney who handled the previous two efforts–all for Sumerian Records.
Leal and Alvarez formed Upon a Burning Body in 2005 along with guitarist Sal Dominguez. At the time Alvarez handled bass duties and guitarist Chris Johnson partnered with Dominguez. The band’s first two albums; The World is Ours (2010) and Red. White. Green. (2012) showed off the quintet’s ability to blend deathcore and groove metal with a southern bite. Each album was themed with all song titles coming from Al Pacino and Robert Rodriguez films, respectively. The latter album, Red. White. Green., found the band enjoying breakout success landing at #1 on the US Heatseekers chart and #11 on the US Hard Rock chart. It also found Upon a Burning Body undertaking its debut run on the 2012 Mayhem Festival.
This summer the band returns with a new Mayhem run and a brand new record, The World is My Enemy Now. It will be the first album with Alvarez taking over guitar duties from the departed Chris Johnson, and it marks the debut of new rhythm section Rey Martinez (bass) and Tito Felix (drums). The World is My Enemy Now is also the band’s first that steps away from the movie title theme of its past efforts.
When asked what album number three would be about, Leal immediately mentions, “Freedom! Real emotion. That’s why it’s called what it’s called, and why I say the things that I say. When it comes out, you’ll know.”
“It’s definitely a real record,” offers Alvarez.
“Real places and real shitty situations,” concurs Leal.
Both agree that the new record will make fans forget about the previous two efforts: “This is the record,” insists Leal. “Third time’s a charm.”
Fans have already had a chance to get a feel for the new record as the band has released three tracks; “Scars”, “Red Razor Wrists” and “Bring the Rain”, as a preview over the weeks leading up to the August 12 release date. You can listen to them below as well as watching the full interview with Danny and Ruben.
